Ghost Rider's Near Miss: The Cameo That Almost Was in Deadpool & Wolverine

Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider on motorcycle

In the wild world of superhero crossovers, sometimes the cameos that don't happen are just as intriguing as those that do. Case in point: the tantalizing possibility of Nicolas Cage reprising his role as Ghost Rider in the latest Marvel blockbuster, "Deadpool & Wolverine."

The Almost-Cameo That Set Fans Ablaze

Ryan Reynolds, the quick-witted star behind Deadpool's mask, recently spilled the beans on a cameo that could have set the screen on fire - literally. In an interview with Collider, Reynolds confirmed that bringing Nicolas Cage back as Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, was more than just idle chatter:

"Yes," Reynolds admitted, "Came to a conversation for sure. Yeah, but no."

It's been over a decade since Cage last donned the leather jacket and flaming skull in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" (2011). Imagine the chaos and quips that could have ensued with Ghost Rider joining the fray!

A Star-Studded Roster of "What Ifs"

Ghost Rider wasn't the only big name that almost made the cut. Director Shawn Levy revealed that rumors of a Taylor Swift cameo "came out of nowhere," while firmly squashing speculation about Sir Patrick Stewart's Professor X making an appearance.

But fear not, X-Men fans! The movie still packs a punch with a slew of familiar faces from the Fox era, including:

  • Pyro
  • Sabretooth
  • Azazel
  • And many more surprises!

New Faces in Familiar Places

While some legacy characters missed out, "Deadpool & Wolverine" introduced us to a new villain with an X-Men pedigree. Emma Corrin steps into the shoes of Cassandra Nova, Professor X's evil twin sister, making her live-action debut.

Box Office Blaze

Even without Ghost Rider's infernal presence, "Deadpool & Wolverine" set the box office ablaze. The film roared into theaters on July 26, 2024, claiming the title of largest R-rated global box office opening ever.

Critical Divide

As with any bold superhero outing, critics found themselves split. However, IGN's review praised the film as "an outrageous, consistently funny superhero comedy," crediting much of its success to the "contagious enthusiasm of leads Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman."

While we may never see Nicolas Cage ride into the MCU as Ghost Rider, the mere possibility ignites the imagination. Who knows what other wild cameos and crossovers the future of superhero cinema might bring?

What do you think? Would Ghost Rider have been a perfect addition to the Deadpool & Wolverine chaos, or are you satisfied with the cameos we got? Let us know in the comments!
